A Filipino festival in honor of the Sto. Nino (means Holy Child, referring to the Child Jesus), whose feastday is usually celebrated in the Philippines during the month of January, was held in Joso Catholic Church last January 24. It was attended by many Filipinos coming from different parts of Ibaraki, Gunma and Tokyo. Foreign visitors from 8 countries -Brazil, Japan, Bolivia, Honduras, Nigeria, United States, Peru, Sri Lanka also came to see the festival, which included mass, prayer, procession, dancing and Philippine foods. This festival is very important for the Filipinos because it commemorates how Christianity came to the Philippines for the first time. It also shows their great devotion to the Child Jesus whom they regard as their great intercessor to God our Father. Like children, they came to honor him, bring their petitions and thanksgiving for many graces received the whole year round. Because it turned out to be a very joyful and nostalgic celebration - the very first Sinulog Celebration done in a collective manner by many devotees of Sto. Nino in Ibaraki and Saitama Diocese, many wanted it to be repeated in the years to come! | |
