The 8th Sinulog Festival took place at Joso Ibaraki Prefecture on the 29th of January. It is a yearly festival in honor of Santo Nino in Joso Catholic Church where Filipinos gather together to celebrate and commemorate the gift of Christian faith which happened about 500 years ago in the Province of Cebu, Philippines. Christianity started in this country when the image of the Child Jesus was presented to King Humabon by the Spanish soldiers accompanied by the Augustinian fathers who baptized the King and his wife in the Island of Limasawa, Cebu. The day’s festival in Joso started with the Eucharistic Celebration officiated by Fr. Gesner Felix, S.C. (Scalabrini) and assisted by the homilist, Bro. Bryan Malnegro, SS.CC. (Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary) There were about 500 people who came from nearby prefectures and participated in the devotional dancing – procession to manifest their devotion and express their petitions to the Child Jesus. The rest of the day was reserved for presentations of songs and modern dances but the highlights were the colorful traditional Sinulog dances rendered by various Church groups. There were raffle draws with valuable household prizes and give-aways which were distributed. Philippine food, drinks and religious articles were available too. It was a beautiful – bright day to remember and remind the Filipinos that Christian faith is a gift from God and it is meant to be celebrated and to be thankful of.
